Euphranor (Greek sculptor and painter, ca. 390-ca. 325 BCE)

Note: Euphranor was a Greek sculptor and painter who worked in the Classical tradition, depicting grandiose heroic themes. He may have been state artist at Athens in the mid-4th century BCE, perhaps playing a role comparable to that of Pheidias a century earlier. Along with Nikias, who trained in his workshop, Euphranor was among the foremost members of the 4th-century BCE Attic school of painting. He was also exceptional in sculpting marble and bronze statues as well as marble reliefs. The only extant sculpture by Euphranor seems to be the mutilated cult statue of Apollo Patroos, mentioned by Pausanias and known also through later copies; it is a colossal work in Pentelic marble that is noted for being both traditional and innovative. The Apollo Patroos has served as a basis for attributions of other works. Knowledge of Euphranor's bronze works is based largely on Pliny's list of those that were famous in Rome in the 1st century CE, none of which is now identifiable with any certainty. In addition to painting and sculpting, Euphranor wrote treatises on his painting, although none of his own paintings survive. His earliest and most famous group of panel paintings (from the 360s BCE) decorated the Stoa of Zeus in the Athenian Agora. Euphranor was an exact contemporary of Praxiteles. He was also the teacher of Leonidas and Charmantides. He possibly died in Athens. |
