Sydney Group (Australian artists' group, active 1945-ca. 1957)
|
Note: Australian group of artists, founded in 1945 and active until ca. 1957. They were founded with the objective of reversing the decline of the New South Wales Society of Artists, which had become a very conservative force in the Sydney art world. The artist had little in common other than a high level of professionalism and some degree of modernist figuration in their work. Jean Bellette, a prominent female artist in what was still a prevalently male domain, was a leader of the group as was her husband Paul Haeflinger. The group disbanded soon after Bellette and Haeflinger moved to Europe in 1957 in response to the inhibited post-war cultural climate of Australia. |
