Record Type: Corporate Body
Mannerist Workshop (Attic vase painters, active 6th and 5th centuries BCE)

Note: Refers to certain black- and red-figure vase painters active in the 5th century BCE known for their highly idiosyncratic drawing styles. Mannerist artists usually favored larger shapes such as amphorae, column kraters, pelikai, and hydriae. The name was adopted from terminology applied to 16th-century Italian painters. The black-figure painters working in this style include the Affecter and Elbows-Out, both of whom worked in the third quarter of the 6th century BCE. These artists were named by Beazley for their self-conscious, "mannered" styles characterized by odd proportions and unnatural gestures. Red-figure Mannerist artists of the early Classical period feature less extreme idiosyncrasies; the Pan Painter is considered the most gifted of the red-figure Mannerists. The red-figure artists frequently depicted revels and symposia and, later, domestic scenes. They are also noted for some of their mythological scenes; Io was depicted for the first time with a human body on a Mannerist pelike, under the influence of contemporary theatre. Sometimes the term is used to refer only to the red-figure vase painters working in this style.
