Wajda, Andrzej (Polish filmmaker, 1926-2016)
|
Note: Wajda is considered one of the world's great narrative filmmakers and won an Academy Award for lifetime achievement in 2000. He took as his subject Polish history and sensibilities. His most well-known films address the Polish resistance to Nazi Germany and the Cold War. He struggled with government censorship during the period of Communist control in Poland. He received the Japanese Imperial Prize for his contribution to film in 1996, and lifetime achievement awards from the Venice film festival in 1998 and Berlin film festival in 2006. |
