Intermediate Group (Greek vase painters, active 4th century BCE in Lucania)
|
Note: This group of Lucanian vase painters is stylistically between later Amykan and early Creusan vase painting. It is closely related to Plain-style Apulian vase painting of the late 5th century BCE and the early decades of the 4th, particularly to to work of the Tarporley Group. The artists have sometimes been described as "Lucano-Apulian;" there must have been close contact between the artists of these two principal areas of southern Italian pottery. Many of the vases created by this group came from Taranto and may even have been made there by early Lucanian artists. Most vases created by this group are small in size and decorated with Dionysian or related subjects. The Intermediate Group probably dates to between ca. 410 and ca. 380 BCE, with the possible exceptions of the Locri (ca. 380-ca. 360 BCE) and Rustic Groups. |
