Independent Group (British group of artists, active ca. 1952-1955)
|
Note: British group centered around London's ICA in the mid-1950s. It was comprised of artists, architects, and critics. Official group activities were limited to discussion groups, though members participated in exhibitions together, most notably "This is Tomorrow," mounted at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 1956. The group is often referred to as a forerunner of the Pop movement of the 1960s. A group of talented young artists, architects, and critics, sponsored by the Institute of Contemporary Arts of London; act. in the 1950s. |
