In 1959, Bernd and Hilla Becher began working together as artist photographers in Düsseldorf, West Germany. They also photographed industrial architecture. In 1961, the Bechers married and began to develop a project of documentary photography on industrial constructions in the Netherlands. Both Bernd and Hilla Becher are professors of photography at the Staatliche Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, Germany.
