Yi Seo (Korean calligrapher and scholar, 1662-1723)
|
Note: Yi Seo was a calligrapher and scholar active in the mid-to-late Joseon period. His father Yi Hajin (1628-1682) and younger brother Yi Ik (1681-1763) were both skilled calligraphers. Yi Seo devoted himself to calligraphy throughout his life. He developed his own calligraphic style known as Donggukjin, from which Yun Duseo (1668-1715), Yun Sun (1680-1740), and Yi Gwangsa (1705-1777) all derived their own work. Yi Seo's calligraphy embraced that of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, but he developed his own style of cursive script. His anthology demonstrates that he understood calligraphy from the perspective of the book "Zhouyi" (Book of Changes) and Neo-Confucianism, and his calligraphic theory is considered highly original. |
