Anselm of Canterbury (Burgundian archbishop, saint, died 1109)

Note: Born in Aosta, Italy. Benedictine monk then abbot, philosopher, theologian, and author. He began writing dialogues and treatises at Bec.Noted as the originator of the ontological argument for the existence of God and of the satisfaction theory of atonement. As archbishop, he defended the church's interests in England amid the Investiture Controversy. Collections of the works of St. Anselm were issued soon after the invention of printing. |
