Yi Inmun (Korean painter and court artist, 1745-after 1824)
|
Note: Served as a member of the Office of Arts, and later promoted to official. He did traditional landscapes but experimented with methods of applying pigment. Yi Inmun worked as a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) during the late Joseon period. He was recruited to document various national events. In 1783, he was selected as the first painter-in-waiting (chabi daeryeong hwawon), for the royal library Gyujanggak. He scored high on an exam called "nokchwijae" taken by painters-in-waiting and was well versed in painting landscapes, figures, insects and grass, pavilions, bamboo and plum blossoms, and scholarly utensils. He enjoyed painting standardized landscapes with the theme of long days in a quiet mountain or an old pine tree with flowing water. Yi Inmun, Kim Hongdo (1745-after 1806), and Bak Yuseong (1745-after 1816) influenced each other's painting styles and had a considerable impact on contemporaneous court painters. Yi's painting style was passed down to younger painters like Im Deukmyeong (1767-1822) and Jo Jeonggyu (1791-?). |
