Yi Jeong (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1554-1626)
|
Note: Middle Chosŏn period poet, calligrapher, and renowned bamboo painter. He was the great-great grandson of King Sejong. His early work shows the influence of painters of the Chinese Yuan period, but he soon incorporated elements of the more contemporary Ming style. He emphasized depth by painting background subjects in lighter ink tones. He was influential in bringing a rhythmic, more graphic style to Korean painting of the period. Yi Jeong was a member of the royal family, but also a painter and calligrapher of the mid-Joseon Dynasty renowned for his ink bamboo paintings. He was also well versed in poetry, calligraphy, and other forms of painting. Along with Yu Deokjang (1675-1756) and Shin Wi (1769-1847) he is considered one of the three great painters of ink bamboo of the Joseon Dynasty. Yi developed his own distinct take on ink bamboo by adopting the style of Li Kan (1245-1320) from the late Yuan Dynasty and the ink bamboo style of the Ming Dynasty that was introduced through painting manuals. Yi's ink bamboo paintings had a profound impact on the development of ink bamboo paintings of later generations and served as a model for subsequent Joseon Dynasty ink bamboo paintings. |
