Benedict XIII, Pope (Italian pope, 1649/1650-1730)
|
Note: Son of Ferdinando Orsini and Giovanna Frangipani of Tolpha, he belonged to the archducal family of Orsini-Gravina. His conception of architecture as an instrument to encourage reform was deeply influenced by Carlo Borromeo; his ideas were expounded by Pompeo Sarnelli, whose "Antica basilicografia" (1686) advocated the reintroduction of the early Christian basilica. His views on the role of sacred art were also Counter-Reformist in spirit. |
