Note: John Blagrave was a mathematician and landowner. The Mathematical Jewel, the work for which he is known, was illustrated with prints engraved by him. Son of John Blagrave of Bulmershe Court at Earley and his wife, Anne, daughter of Sir Anthony Hungerford of Down Ampney in Gloucestershire. He was educated at Reading School and St John's College, Oxford, although he never graduated from the latter. In 1591 his father bestowed on him the lands at Southcote Manor, in what is now the Reading suburb of Southcote. |
