Cyliax, Walter (German typographer and art director, 1899-1945)
|
Note: Studied at the Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig. From 1929-1937 works as art director for the Fretz printing plant in Zurich. In 1929 he initiates contact with members of the 'ring neuer werbegestalter' including Jan Tschichold. Often used CYL as his signature and may have designed at least some work in tandem with his wife, Maria. He was one of the first designers in Switzerland to adopt the New Typography; was co-founder of Typographische Monatsblätter; returned to Germany in 1936 and then moved to Austria where he managed an "aryanized" printing firm in Vienna; and died during a bombing raid. |
