Tufiño, Rafael (Puerto Rican painter and printmaker, 1922-2008)
|
Note: Born in Brooklyn, Tufiño spent early years in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After serving in WWII he studied art in Mexico, and returned to Puerto Rico in the 1950s. He was a member of Generación del Cincuenta, an artists' group founded to celebrate cultural life in Puerto Rico. He worked in multiple media and designed a series of posters in the 1950s for government sponsored culture and hygiene campaigns. He is particularly noted for his screen prints, and is known popularly as "the painter of the people" for his depiction of quotidian scenes and subjects. |
