Hunt Painter (Greek vase painter, active ca. 565-ca. 530 BCE)
|
Note: The Hunt Painter decorated vases in Sparta in the black-figure technique from 565 to 530 BCE. In addition to being a vase painter, he was also a potter. While he concentrated on cups, he also decorated larger vessels. The Hunt Painter favored mythological scenes but also depicted everyday life. He often depicted scenes that are cut off by the circular shape of the cup itself; this style, called "porthole compositions," was his most distinctive stylistic trait. As with most Greek vase painters, the real name of the Hunt Painter is unknown, and he is identified only by the stylistic traits of his work. His name comes from paintings of a boar hunt, probably the mythological Kalydonian boar hunt. |
