Record Type: Person
Polygnotos (Greek vase painter, active ca. 450-425 BCE)

Note: Polygnotos trained in the workshop of the Niobid Painter. He was probably named after the painter and sculptor Polygnotos of Thasos (active ca. 475-450 BCE). Five signed vases survive and nearly 70 more have been attributed to him, mostly by Beazley. He was a prolific Athenian red-figure artist of the High Classical period whose monumental style was apparently based on Early Classical wall paintings, notably by Mikon and Polygnotos of Thasos, from whom he probably derived the use of an uneven groundline to suggest landscape.
