Hopkins, Mary Frances (American heiress, 1818-1891)
|
Note: Wife of railroad industrialist Mark Hopkins, Jr., one of the four principle investors who formed the Central Pacific Railroad. Hopkins (née Sherwood) was born on March 8, 1818 in New York City. She married Mark Hopkins, her first-cousin, on September 22, 1854 in New York City. Census reports indicate that the Hopkins lived in Sacramento during the 1860s and 1870s. The Hopkins built a mansion on Nob Hill, San Francisco that was completed in 1878, the same year that Mark Hopkins died. She then adopted her housekeeper's adult son, Timothy N. Nolan (later changed his name to Timothy Hopkins). She lived in the Nob Hill residence for three years before returning to the east coast to marry Edward Francis Searles, an interior and architectural designer who designed her new home in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Hopkins died on July 25, 1891 in Essex County, Massachusetts.
