Delahante, Alexis (French dealer and miniaturist, 1767-1837, active in London)
|
Note: An art dealer specializing in furniture. He was also a painter of miniatures. Born in France but emigrated to England during the Terror. He is regarded as an important figure in the history of the fine art and decorative art market in the beginning of the 19th century. He acted as art dealer, advisor, and 'expert' (auctioneer). He is often mentioned by Buchanan (Memoirs, II, pp.190-195) and in the Penrice letters. See also Whitley, p.215. He married the daughter of Seb. Erard, the musical instrument maker and dealer. Danloux (Journal, p.433) says that Panne complained that Delahante was monopolizing the trade and had stolen customers from him. From the Penrice letters: Delahante was the only dealer of whom Lawrence approved. From T. Fawcett, p.103: Delahante's wife had just committed suicide and the dealer was anxious to sell up stock and leave for the continent. (1813). Dawson Turner (Outlines, p.76) says he died in 1837. In his memoirs, Buchanan says that Delahante imported the Conversion of St Paul by Rubens into England. However, in a letter of Apr.30, 1805, he says that Panne sold it to Elwin. So Panne may have been Delahante's agent in London. |
