Salisbury, Ela de Longespée (English countess and abbess, 1187-1261)
|
Note: Daughter of William, earl of Salisbury and his wife, Eleanor de Vitré. She married William Longespée (died 1226) and had four sons and four daughters. In 1220 she and her husband laid the fifth and fourth foundation stones for the new cathedral in Salisbury. After her husband's death, she became a benefactor to the church. She founded Lacock Abbey circa 1230, later becoming its first abbess in 1239. She resigned 26 years later. Following her death in 1261, she was buried in the abbey.
