Record Type: Corporate Body
Bentvueghels (Dutch and Flemish painters group in Rome, ca. 1623-1720)

Note: Fraternal artists' society of Dutch and Flemish artists in Rome. Founded in ca. 1623, was a primarily social group, providing a meeting-place and, when needed, financial support for fellow countrymen. Its members called themselves Bentvueghels ('birds of a feather') and the Schildersbent ('painters' clique'). Their motto was 'Bacco, Tabacco e Venere' (Bacchus, Tobacco, and Venus (Love)). The society was dissolved by papal decree in 1720 by Pope Clement XI for mocking the sacrament of baptism: new members were given 'Bentnamen' (pseudonyms) during a baptism in wine. Other ceremonies mocked the initiation rites of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Paulus Bor was a founding member; Pieter van Laer was also a leader, ca. 1625-1638. The society also allowed some non-Netherlandish painters to join, primarily of Nordic and Germanic origins. Often at odds with the Roman artists' guild, Accademia di San Luca.
