Gwilt, Joseph (English architect, architectural critic, and theorist, 1784-1863)
|
Note: Born 11 January 1784; died 14 September 1863. Son of George Gwilt I (1746-1807), architect, and brother of George Gwilt II (1775-1856), architect. Father of John Sebastien Gwilt (1811-1890), architect. Entered his father's office in 1799. Held the position "Surveyor to the Commissioners of Sewers for Surrey" from 1807 to 1846. Gwilt is most famous for his career as an architectural theorist and critic, which began in 1811. Translated "Vitruvius" into English in 1826. Wrote "An Encyclopedia of Architecture" in 1842. |
