|
Note: Born of a noble but impoverished family, his father was Raffaelo della Rovere and his mother was Theodora Manerola, a lady of Greek extraction. His papacy was marked by an active foreign policy; he was one of the most powerful rulers of his age, leading military efforts to prevent French domination of Italy. He is also recognized as the great patron of the High Renaissance in Rome; commissioned Donato Bramante to build the new St Peter’s, Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and Raphael to decorate his private apartments, the Stanze. |
