Sŏnjo, King of Korea (Korean ruler and artist, 1552-1608)
|
Note: Reigned during the Chosŏn dynasty (1392-1910). As an artist he excelled in ink paintings of bamboo and orchid as well as calligraphy. King Seonjo was the fourteenth king of the Joseon Dynasty, but also a calligrapher and painter. He was especially acclaimed as a calligrapher. The running and cursive scripts that he often employed in his later years were particularly noteworthy. King Seonjo enjoyed painting orchids in his middle years and bamboo in his later years. Kim Jeonghui, a celebrated connoisseur of the nineteenth century, once stated that he considered the ink orchid paintings by King Seonjo to be equal to those by Zheng Sixiao from the Song Dynasty China. |
