An Sunhwan (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1872-1942)
|
Note: An Sunhwan was a calligrapher, painter, government official, dealer in calligraphy and painting, and businessman active in the modern era. From 1890, he worked as a calligraphy and painting broker. Starting in 1899, he served as a government official. After his retirement, he ran a famous restaurant called Taehwagwan that became a gathering place for calligraphers and painters. He was well versed in painting the Four Gentlemen, particularly orchids. He added decorative paintings of bamboo and orchids to a number of temple hanging boards bearing calligraphy by his close friend the calligrapher and painter Kim Gyujin (1864-1933). His orchid paintings followed in the style of Kim Eungwon (1855-1921), who depicted thin and curved orchid leaves against rocks. |
