Note: Philanthropist, collector, and businessman was active in Los Angeles, founding a museum for his collection of contemporary art. He gave to numerous causes in the fields of education, science, and medicine, from a fortune amassed through the tract housing and insurance industries. He was best known for his contributions to the Los Angeles Museum County of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Disney Concert Hall, and for establishing the Broad, an institution housing the 2,000-piece collection of postwar contemporary art he assembled with his wife, Edythe. |
