Landsverk, Halvor (American carver, 1909-1998)
|
Note: Halvor Landsverk, whose parents emigrated from Norway, was born at Highland Prairie, Minnesota (near Peterson), January 20, 1909. His formal art training consisted of a three-year correspondence course in art. During the 1930s he created sculptures in white and colored cement. From the 1940s until the early 1960s he farmed, did factory work and helped run the family museum at Highland Prairie. Eventually he began to carve Norwegian kubbestoler, chairs carved from the trunks of basswood trees. During his lifetime he is known to have carved over 300 kubbestoler decorated with elaborate relief scenes showing Norwegian themes. He died in Rushford, Minnesota on July 19, 1998. |
