Landsverk, Tarkjel (American painter and sculptor, 1859-1949, born in Norway)

Note: Tarkjel Landsverk was born in Seljord, Telemark, Norway, October 18, 1859. He studied to be a teacher before emigrating to the U.S. in 1884, settling on a farm in Minnesota. He also taught parochial school. In addition to farming, Landsverk enjoyed painting, carpentry, woodcarving, playing music, writing poetry and creating sculptures from stone. He was skilled as a plasterer and could shape limestone blocks and build walls. He was self-taught as an artist. Landsverk was married to Helga Oian with whom he had four children. He died at Highland Prairie in 1945.
