Record Type: Person
Yun Duseo (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1668-1715)

Note: Korean painter's career spanned the mid- to late Chosŏn period. He studied the Confucian classics, military strategy, geography and astronomy and passed the civil service exam in 1693. Later he studied calligraphy with Yi Sŏ. He painted a variety of subjects and was stylistically adept, able to paint in both a conservative Chinese style derived from the Song and Yuan periods and a more progressive, realistic idiom related to the 'sirhak' ideas new to the era. A calligrapher and civil official of the mid-to-late Joseon period, Yun Duseo was the great-grandson of Yun Seondo (1587-1671) and the father of the literati artist Yun Deokhui (1685-1766). Despite his relatively short life that ended at the age of forty-eight, he established a name in a wide range of fields, including portraits, genre paintings, paintings based on sketches from nature, paintings of horses, Southern School of Painting landscapes, painting theory, and calligraphy styles, and engravings and maps. In his paintings of human figures and horses, he emphasized monochrome painting using delicate ink outlines to achieve a distinctive style. Due to the ongoing disputes between political factions, he did not pursue a career in government office, but instead devoted himself to study and art, contributing to invigorating calligraphy and painting in the late Joseon Dynasty. He decided to become a literati who pursued painting as a hobby. His self-portrait is a work representative of Joseon-era painting.
