Nicholas III, Pope (Italian pope, ca. 1210-1280)
|
Note: Born a Roman nobleman; he served under eight popes. As pope, he is noted as an even-handed supporter of both the Franciscans and Dominicans; in his Divine Comedy, Dante assigned Nicholas III to hell for reputed nepotism and avarice. He is also noted as a patron of arts and architecture, including a restoration of St. Peter's, a new Vatican Palace, and the gardens of the Vatican. |
