Record Type: Person
Louis XVI, King of France (French king, 1754-1793)

Note: Son of Louis, Dauphin of France, who was the son and heir apparent of Louis XV of France. As a result of the Dauphin's death in 1765, Louis succeeded his grandfather in 1774. He attempted to reform France in accordance with Enlightenment ideals, including the abolishment of serfdom, removal of the taille, and increase tolerance toward non-Catholics; however, the French nobility successfully opposed implementation of the reforms. The French Revolution followed. Louis and his queen consort, Marie-Antoinette were executed. He was a patron of the arts, particularly academic art, primarily through delegation by the Comte d'Angiviller.
