Record Type: Person
Gang Sehwang (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1713-1791)

Note: Thought to be among the most accomplished literati artists of late 18th century Korea. He also acted as a critic of calligraphy and painting. His own theories emphasized the practical awareness of the artist, and in this capacity he was influenced by the School of Practical Learning lead by Yi Ik, who was his neighbor on Mount An. Kang was the most influential artist in the development of late 18th century Korean painting, particularly the 'true view' school. The calligrapher and painter Gang Sehwang served as a painting and calligraphy critic and a civil official during the late Joseon period. He was well versed in poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Since his youth, Gang actively engaged in creating and reviewing paintings and calligraphic works. He was a teacher of the court painter Kim Hongdo (1745-after 1806) and the literati painter Shin Wi (1769-1847). He maintained friendships with other painters such as Sim Sajeong (1707-1769) and Kim Eunghwan (1742-1789). Based on his emphasis on realism, he developed "true-view" landscape painting (jingyeong sansuhwa), figure painting, and genre painting. He also pioneered the adoption of Western painting influences. Gang learned the calligraphic styles of Mi Fu and Zhao Mengfu. He was skilled at seal engraving and mastered various calligraphic styles. He particularly enjoyed using running script.
