Note: Born 5 October 1864; died 6 June 1948. In 1880, Lumière researched the making of gelatin-bromide plates and found a new method to create dry plates. From 1887 onwards the Lumière brothers experimented with many photographic processes. In 1894, Lumière became interested in the animated image and created the "Cinématographe", and in 1895 the brothers opened their "Cinématographe" theatre in Paris. From 1899 to 1904 Lumière devoted his research to photography in color. He also produced the autochrome plate. In 1907 the Lumière brothers marketed the autochrome plate process.
