Record Type: Person
Stoeckel, Carl (American patron, 1858-1925)

Note: Music patron; born in New Haven, Conn. Son of a music professor at Yale, in 1895 he married Ellen Battell Terry, an heiress from Norfolk, Conn. Together they made their home a center of music and the arts and they provided funds for various local cultural institutions, particularly glee clubs and choral groups. In 1899 they sponsored the first of a series of annual concerts that in 1906 moved to the "music shed" on their Norfolk estate. Attracting major performers and conductors - including Jan Sibelius in 1914 - and commissioning new works, this series has continued ever since as a summer music festival.
