Bute Master (French or Flemish illuminator, active ca. 1260-1290)
|
Note: Active in northeastern France and Paris, this talented and important artist is named for the Bute Psalter in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Bute Master created the illuminations for the portion of the manuscript dating from the 1200s. In it he painted 190 historiated initials and many marginal drolleries. Instead of highlighting the eight major divisions of the psalms as was the custom, he devoted a figural scene to every psalm. HIs illuminations display distinctive, original iconography that may reflect the patron's instructions. |
