Dance, George, the elder (English master shipbuilder, surveyor, and architect, 1700-1768)

Note: George Dance the Elder was the son of Giles Dance (died 1751), mason in Winchester and later in London. Giles took his son in partnership ca. 1717. He was the son-in-law of the surveyor and developer John Gould. He was the father of the artist Nathaniel Dance (1735-1811) and the architect George Dance the Younger (1741-1825). Dance was appointed clerk of the works to the City of London in 1735. He resigned his office in favor of his son George a few days before his death. British architect; father of architect George Dance the younger (1741-1825).
