Yi Byeongjik (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1896-1973)
|
Note: Yi Byeongjik was a calligrapher, painter, collector, and art educator active in the modern era. Studying at the Painting Research Institute (Seohwa yeonguhoe), he became a disciple of Kim Gyujin (1864-1933), a celebrated calligrapher and painter of the time. In 1923, he began teaching Eastern-style painting to students at the Goryeo Art Society (Goryeo misulhoe) along with Kim Eunho (1892-1979). Yi was famous for his calligraphy and painting theories and connoisseurship. A major collector, he auctioned off his collection to raise money for education projects. Under the influence of Kim Gyujin, he focused on painting the four plants collectively known as the Four Gentlemen. He was particularly well-known for ink bamboo paintings on a folding screen showing bold and strong brushstrokes. |
