Yi Jaegwan (Korean painter, 1783-1849)
|
Note: Yi Jaegwan was a painter and commoner literati active in the late Joseon Dynasty. He was never formally trained, but he taught himself to paint by studying Chinese manuals. He mainly produced paintings of landscapes (including some featuring human figures), and many of his works are based on narratives and poems, such as long days in a quiet mountain and Mi Fu engaged in stone worship. His work is grounded in the Chinese Southern school literati style of painting in terms of both themes and brushwork, meaning an emphasis on a well-loaded brush. Moreover, he excelled at portraits and meticulous brushwork, as evidenced by his participation in the copying of a portrait of King Taejo (r. 1392-1398). He produced paintings on a wide range of subjects, including bird-and-flower and fish-and-crab. |
