Abu'l-Hasan Ghaffari (Persian court painter, 1817-1866)
|
Note: Abu'l-Hasan Ghaffari was the court artist of Qajar monarch Muhammad (reigned 1834-1848). He was later sent to study painting in Italy from 1846 to 1850. He was also the supervisor of the painting department at the Dar al-Funun. During this period he was commissioned to create a 1134 page Iranian translation of The Thousand and One Nights, which was completed in 1855; accomplishing this task required him to suprvise 34 painters. In 1857 Ghaffari finished seven paintings for Nizamiyya Palace in which he depicted Nasir al-Din Shah (reigned 1848-1896) along with his sons and courtiers. 1861 he accepted a position as the director of a government periodical known as Rūznāma-yi dawlat-i 'aliya-yi Īrān. From this period on the artist persued a career in administration, but portraiture remained his specialty. |
