Azuma, Kengiro (Japanese painter, sculptor, and draftsman, 1926-2016)
|
Note: Born to a family of bronze workers, he was a pilot in the Japanese armed forces during WWII. After the war he studied at the University of Tokyo in 1949 then in Milan at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera from 1956. He was an assistant to the sculptor Marino Marini, who influenced his work. He exhibited throughout Europe in the 1960s, and was featured in the exhibition “The New Japanese Painting and Sculpture” in 1966 at MoMA in New York. A retrospective of his work was mounted in 1994 at the Museo d’Arte of Mendrisio in Switzerland. |
