Nabis (French artists, active 1888-1900)
|
Note: Group of predominantly French artists, who, inspired by the Synthetist ideas of Gaugin, pursued a new direction in with the use of bold colors and a decorative approach to painting rather than academic or naturalistic. Forming a secret brotherhood rather than a formal group around 1888-1889, members included its founder, Maurice Denis, along with Pierre Bonnard, Paul Ranson, and Henri-Gabriel Ibels. Already drawn together by their common interest in idealist philosophy and Symbolist literature, they adopted their esoteric name from the Hebrew word for prophets, at the suggestion of Henri Cazalis, a Hebrew scholar. Although the Nabis never developed a clear, cohesive style, similar traits among their work such as simple drawing style, flat areas of colors, and unusual choices for support such as cardboard or velvet can be seen in their work. |
