Wagner, Martin (German architect, urban planner, and art critic, 1885-1957)

Note: Martin Wagner received degrees in city planning from the Institute of Technology in Dresden, Germany, in either 1910 or 1912, and from the Technische Hochschule in Berlin, Germany, in 1915. He was director of the office of city planning in Berlin from 1926 to 1933. In 1928 Martin Wagner and the Berlin City-Ausschuss organized the Wettbewerb für den Alexanderplatz. They commissioned Peter Behrens, Brüder Luckhardt und Alfons Anker, Paul Mebes, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Müller-Erkelenz and Johann Emil Schaudt as the architects. Mies van der Rohe designed the Mies van der Rohe Vorschlag für den Alexanderplatz that same year and finished last in the competition. Martin Wagner moved to Turkey in 1935 and was a professor of city planning at the Academy of Arts in Istanbul from either 1935 to 1937 or 1935 to 1938. In 1938 he moved to the United States and taught regional planning at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1938 to 1950. Planner, Germany.
