Yi Gwangsa (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1705-1777)
|
Note: Yi Gwangsa was a calligrapher, painter, and literati figure from the late Joseon period. He belonged to a family that produced several noted calligraphers, including Yi Gyeongseok (1595-1671) and Yi Jeongyeong (1616-1686). However, with the family's political downfall, Yi Gwangsa did not pursue a career in government but instead focused on studying history while creating poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting. He learned calligraphy from Yun Sun (1680-1740) and developed a consistent calligraphic style in regular, cursive, seal, and clerical scripts by modeling it after the Chinese styles of the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Yi was proficient at poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting. Through his publications, he greatly contributed to establishing the theoretical system for Joseon-era Korean calligraphy. |
