Yi Hancheol (Korean painter and court artist, 1812-after 1893)

Note: Yi Hancheol was a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) at the end of the Joseon period. One of the definitive court painters of the nineteenth century, his career lasted more than sixty years and he left many works. As the leading portraitist of his time, he created portraits of a number of prominent scholar-officials, and even of the king. He contributed greatly to ensuring that the advanced portrait techniques of the eighteenth century were passed on in the nineteenth. In addition, he demonstrated mastery of almost all subjects of painting, including landscapes, figures, birds, and animals. Even in the shadow of the influence of Kim Hongdo (1745-after 1806), he demonstrated distinctive expressions using bold brushwork in his later years.
