Gobelins Tapestry Manufactory (French tapestry manufactory, active from 1662 to the present)

Note: Although the Gobelins manufactory produced various types of art works, "Gobelins" is most often associated with the creation of tapestries. In the mid-17th century, the head of the Gobelins, Le Brun, worked with artists such as Bandrin Yvart, Joseph Yvart, Adam Frans van der Meulen, Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, René-Antoine Houasse, Guillaume Anguier and Gilbert de Sēve to specialize in various details (e.g., flowers, animals, and landscapes) and to transfer the overall designs to cartoons that the weavers would use. Over 250 weavers lived in the Gobelins complex or near it. They were paid by the workshop heads according to a scale based on high- or low-warp work, taking into account the difficulty of the work. A fixed salary was instituted in 1790. The output was based on original designs and on famous paintings, such as Raphael's paintings in the Stanze in the Vatican. The work force was reduced due to the war and economic problems in 1694, but it reopened in 1699. The tapestry manufactory was headed by architects beginning in the 18th century. The workshops are famous for having developed the format of tapestries with borders (à alentours) in the 18th century. They also used a wide range of graded colors in non-fast dyes to imitate the effects of painting, resulting in the subsequent loss of color and detail over time. The manufactory continued to flourish in the 19th and 20th centuries, reproducing designs from paintings of Picasso and others. The Gobelins Tapestry Manufactory is still in operation today, but it merged with Beauvais Tapestry Manufactory in 1940.
