Kang, Hŭi-an (Korean painter, 1419-1464)
|
Note: Gang Huian was a calligrapher and painter who served as a civil official in the early Joseon period. His father Gang Seokdeok (1395-1459) was a calligrapher, his young brother Gang Huimaeng (1424-1483) was a calligrapher and painter, and his daughter's son Kim Pil (dates unknown) was also skilled at calligraphy. Gang was responsible for providing the carved seal script inscription for a royal seal produced in 1445. He was in charge of creating the typeface for a new set of metal type cast in 1455. He was well versed in seal, clerical, and cursive scripts and was compared to noted Chinese calligraphers like Wang Xizhi and Zhao Mengfu. His calligraphy earned him popularity in China as well. Gang excelled at painting various themes such as landscapes, figures, and grass and insects. One of his notable paintings is "A Lofty Scholar Contemplating Water". |
