Record Type: Person
Byeon Sangbyeok (Korean painter and court artist, 1730-1775)

Note: Byeon Sangbyeok worked as a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) during the late Joseon period. Byeon was so proficient at portraits that he was entrusted with producing portraits of King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776) in 1763 and 1773. He created about 100 portraits of noted sages of the time over the course of his life. Along with his portraits, Byeon produced paintings of birds and animals. He applied meticulous and precise brushwork for depicting the faces, beards, and tiger skins in his portraits and the feathers and fur of birds and animals in an effort to portray them in a realistic manner. He was particularly versed in illustrating cats and chickens, earning him nicknames like "Byeon Cat" and "Byeon Chicken." Byeon is considered a leading figure in the development of eighteenth-century portrait painting and to have elevated the paintings of flowers, birds, and animals to new heights based on his achievements with portraits.
