Cobra (International group of artists, active 1948-1951)
|
Note: Artist group founded in Paris in 1948, and named for the capital cities of the countries of origin of the members of the group (Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam). The three main spokespeople for the group were Asger Jorn, Christian Dotrement and Constant. The group, as a whole, was inspired by spontaneous and experimental working methods such as folk art, primitive art, as well as poetry and film. Philosophically, Cobra was influenced by Marxism, rejecting Western culture as well as Surrealism. The group had two major exhibitions, both organized by Asger Jorn, in 1949 and 1951 respectively, before dissolving. Cobra was a major influence on the work of the European Abstract Expressionists. |
