Acosta, Cristóbal de (Portuguese botanist and draftsman, ca. 1515-ca. 1592)
|
Note: Although his death date is often listed as "1580," more recent sources state that he died closer to, but before, 1594. He was not born in Portugal, but probably in the Cape Verde Islands or another Portuguese possession of Africa. He is best known for the illustrated descriptions of plants and animals of the East Indies in his "Tractado de las drogas," published in 1578. The woodcuts in this volume were reproduced from freehand drawings executed by Acosta. He traveled to India, Persia, China, and Africa to study natural history. He settled in Burgos, Spain. After the death of his wife, he retired to a monastery. A Moon crater has been named in his honor, "Langrenus C." |
