Callcott, Maria (British painter and author, 1785-1842)
|
Note: Maria Dundas was raised in England, the daughter of Rear-Admiral George Dundas. In 1808, while her father was stationed in India, she visited the country and married Captain Thomas Graham a year later. When she returned to England in 1811 she published her first book, 'Journal of a Residence in India'. She continued to travel and write, visiting Italy in 1819 and publishing 'Memoirs of the Life of Nicholas Poussin' in 1820. From 1821 to 1823, she visited Brazil and Chile. In 1827 she married Augustus Wall Callcott, after having been widowed several years earlier. Her new husband, an artist, provided the drawings on which she based the engravings for her 'Descriptions of the Annunziaa dell' Arena: Or Giotto's Chapel in Padua.' She also wrote several essays on the history of painting. |
